Fruit and Fruit Products

The term fruit (Middle High German: obez) originally meant any food that is neither bread nor meat, including legumes, vegetables and similar items. Fruit varieties typically come from perennial plants. The sugar content in fruits is often high. Botanically speaking, fruit develops from a fertilized flower. In botany, the term fruit encompasses an easily understandable description.
Fruit comes canned, usually sweetened and spiced, sometimes also cut into halves or slices. Fruit products in jars are similar but can also be found as puree or compote. Fruit compote, as well as ready-made fruit salads in jars, is possible. Frozen fruit in bags or cartons is available in various sizes, easily portioned, and can be refrozen after thawing.

Properties: Fruit and Fruit Products

Under the collective term fruit, one understands the fruits of plants from cultivated or also wild-grown seeds, as well as fruits that are eaten raw and processed and have a pleasant, often sweet, sometimes sour taste.

The seeds of such fruits are generally very nutritious due to their calorie content. However, they cannot usually be consumed with the fruit; nevertheless, they typically possess fruit flesh with a high water content. They thus only have a lower nutritional value but often offer a high content of vitamins and minerals.
Typical fruit types include pome fruits, stone fruits, berry fruits, citrus fruits, as well as tropical and other exotic fruits. Fruit products are offered in all forms and are generally available everywhere.

Fruit is found all over the world. Homegrown fruits include apples, pears, plums, cherries, mirabelles and others. Since subtropical and exotic varieties require a corresponding climate to grow, they must be imported.

Fruit can generally be eaten fresh. The selection of fruit products is surprisingly large. There are compotes, jams, purees and cake toppings made from fruits. It refines dairy products, desserts, sauces, and meat dishes (cranberries with game).
It can be cooked, dried, preserved, and blended. There are fruit brandies, liqueurs, schnapps, and similar drinks.

Another drinking option for fruit falls under alcoholic beverages. Here, fruit aromas or whole pieces of fruit are added. Wines are mostly produced directly from the fruit. Another fruit product is yogurt. It can be made from a mixture of fruits and dairy products, or almost pure fruit.

Fruit in the form of juices in different qualities and various flavor profiles are also widely available e.g., nectar, juice, or direct juice. The highest quality drinking form is the smoothie. Here, the fruit product is completely processed into a drink that becomes very creamy. For this, however, high-quality slow juicers should be used. These are indispensable for gentle juice production.

In Asian cuisine, ripe yuzu fruits are often used for the preparation of heartily fruity salads, but also as an ingredient in aromatic dressings. Furthermore, this is also used as a topping for numerous Japanese pastry specialties. Besides salt and pepper, the yuzu fruit is also considered a spice in Japan to make dishes more sour or bitter.
Increasingly, one finds also kiwani, pitaya or dragonfruit, acerola, and similar exotic fruits on supermarket shelves.
