Origin
Alpha-Tocopherol is synthesized from the starting substance Tocopherol in a chemical process. In this procedure, it is also possible that E 307 can be produced with the help of genetically modified organisms.
Usage
There are no authorization restrictions for the use as an antioxidant for E 307 and the same conditions apply as for E 306. However, unlike E 306, E 307 is not authorized for Bio products. Alpha-Tocopherol is used in the following foods: Oils and margarines, fats, infant formula, chewing gum, dressings, and desserts.
Risks
The use of E 307 is considered completely harmless. At very high dosages of Tocopherol, certain negative symptoms can occur such as metabolic disorders. However, as an antioxidant, E 307 is never added to foods in corresponding high doses. This warning mainly applies for additional Tocopherol intake through dietary supplements.
