Last updated: 22.01.2018

Delta-Tocopherol is one of seven substances that are grouped under the term Vitamin E. Delta-Tocopherol is a synthetic form of Vitamin E, although its Vitamin E effect is very weak. However, it has a very strong antioxidant effect and is therefore used in the food industry as an antioxidant under the designation E 309.

E 309 - Delta-Tocopherol

Origin

Delta-Tocopherol is synthesized from the starting substance Tocopherol through a chemical process. In this process, it is also possible that E 309 can be produced with the help of genetically modified organisms.

Usage

The use of E 309 as an antioxidant has no approval restrictions and the same conditions apply as for E 306, E 307, and E 308. However, unlike E 306, E 309 is not approved for Bio products. Delta-Tocopherol is used in the following foods: Oils and margarines, fats, infant formula, chewing gum, dressing, and desserts.

Risks

The use of E 309 is considered completely harmless. At very high dosages of Tocopherol, certain negative symptoms such as metabolic disorders can occur. However, as an antioxidant, E 309 is never added to food in corresponding high doses. This warning applies primarily for additional Tocopherol intake through dietary supplements.
