E 470a - Salts of Fatty Acids

Last updated: 23.01.2018

Fatty acid salts such as sodium, potassium or calcium salts are normally known as cleaning agents, because these are soaps. But in the food industry they are also used as an additive under the designation E 470a and mainly serve as emulsifiers or support the function of other emulsifiers.

E 470a - Salts of Fatty Acids

Origin

E 470a is obtained from natural plant or animal fats, which are mixed with lye in a chemical process. In industrial production, rapeseed oil, corn oil, or soybean oil are typically used.

Usage

Fatty acid salts have the property of finely distributing water- or fat-soluble substances in an emulsion of fat and water, thus creating a homogeneous liquid. E 470a is permitted for use in food without any maximum quantity restrictions. The food additive E 470a is often found in the following products: baked goods, chewing gum, confectionery, sugar cubes, and also sweetener tablets.

Risks

E 470a is considered a completely harmless food additive. Fatty acid salts are metabolized like fats by the human organism. An ADI value (Acceptable Daily Intake), i.e., a recommended daily dose has not been established.
