E 175 - Gold

Origin

For industrial use, it is extracted from gold-bearing rocks using various methods. E 175 is a pigment dye and therefore insoluble.

Usage

E 175 is only permitted as a coloring agent for a few food items. Its usage in food technology is simultaneously limited by the rarity of the precious metal gold and the resulting high price. E 175 is only allowed in coatings and decorations for sweets and pralines, and as an additive in liqueurs and spirits.

Risks

When taken in small doses by the human body, gold is considered harmless because it is indigestible and does not accumulate in the body. However, larger amounts can cause poisoning symptoms. Among other things, E 175 is also used in rheumatism therapy as a health-promoting agent. However, its use is warned against, as treatment with gold salts can lead to serious consequences such as liver or kidney damage.
