E 1518 - Triacetin glycerol

Origin

Glycerol triacetate is a substance that also naturally occurs in the fruit papaya. E 1518 therefore has the property of tasting sweet and fruity. For use in food production, however, E 1518 is produced through chemical reaction of the two substances glycerin and acetic acid. E 1518 is a colorless, oily liquid that is not very soluble in water.

Usage

E 1518 has the ability to bind water and is therefore mainly used as a humectant. However, E 1518 is also used as a carrier substance for flavors. E 1518 is only approved for use in the following products: chewing gum and flavors. There are no maximum quantity restrictions for its use as an additive in chewing gums. As an addition to flavors, the permitted maximum amount is 3 g/kg.

Risks

E 1518 is considered a food additive that is completely harmless to the human body. Therefore, a recommended daily dose (ADI value) has not been set.
