E 508 - Potassium chloride

In the food industry, E 508 is the designation for potassium chloride, which is permitted as a flavor enhancer under this designation. Potassium chloride is chemically speaking the potassium salt of hydrochloric acid (E 507) and is available in nature as a natural salt occurrence. Salt is an essential substance that contributes to maintaining many functions in the human organism.

E 508 - Potassium chloride

Origin

E 508 can be obtained from salt mined in salt mines for industrial use. Since potassium chloride is poorly soluble, it must be extracted from the salt through a chemical process. This usually occurs by crystallization of the substance or E 508 is extracted from salt through heat treatment. After this process, E 508 appears as colorless, salty-tasting crystals.

Usage

In its role as a flavor enhancer, food additive E 508 is often used in ready meals, spices, and calorie-reduced dishes. Generally, E 508 can be used without maximum quantity restrictions in all food products.

Risks

Potassium chloride belongs to the group of additives considered harmless to health. So far, no ADI value (Acceptable Daily Intake) has been established for E 508.
