E 1505 - Triethyl citrate

Citronenesthylester is used in the European Union as a food additive. Under the designation E 1505, it is approved as a carrier substance and is primarily used to optimally distribute and stabilize flavorings in foods. Additionally, E 1505 is capable of distributing aromas in aqueous solutions.

E 1505 - Triethyl citrate

Origin

Citric acid triethyl ester is the ester of citric acid (E 330) and is also produced from this. In the chemical process for producing E 1505 for industrial food production, genetically modified microorganisms may be used. E 1505 appears as a colorless, slightly oily liquid in its final product form with a pleasant typical ester odor.

Usage

E 1505 is exclusively permitted for use as a food additive in egg white powder and in aromas. There are no maximum quantity restrictions for its use in egg white powder, while the maximum amount allowed for use in aromas is 3 g/kg. As an addition to egg white powder, E 1505 is responsible for restoring the whipping capacity of the egg whites.

Risks

The stabilizer E 1505, unlike other similarly used substances, is considered a harmless alternative and is classified as a substance without concern for human organisms. The established ADI value (Acceptable Daily Intake) is at 20 mg/kg body weight. However, mold allergy sufferers should avoid E1505, as residues may be present due to the method of production.
