E 445 - Glyceride

The substance Glycerinester is used in the food industry as a stabilizer. Under the designation E 445, it is used to finely distribute substances such as aromas but also turbidity agents in beverages and prevent settling at the surface or sinking.

E 445 - Glyceride

Origin

E 445 is produced by reacting Glycerin (E 422) with the resin of a specific pine species, namely the Swamp Pine, in a chemical process. The end product is fat-soluble and has a greater density than water, making it particularly well-suited for contributing to the stabilization of the appearance of beverages.

Usage

Glycerinesters may only be used for surface treatment of citrus fruits and as a stabilizer for certain beverage types. In question are aromatized cloudy non-alcoholic drinks (here, up to 100 mg/l can be added) and aromatized cloudy alcoholic beverages with less than 15% Vol. (up to 100 mg/l is allowed).

Risks

The food additive E 445 is currently considered safe; however, this judgment is based on very few data available for this stabilizer. The ADI value (Acceptable Daily Intake) is set at a quantity of 12.5 mg per kilogram of body weight.
