Origin
Tin(II) chloride is chemically the chloride of tin or the tin salt of hydrochloric acid (E 507). For industrial use in food production, Tin(II) Chloride is obtained by heating tin with hydrogen chloride. The end product is E 512 as white crystals that have a metallic taste and dissolve well in water.
Usage
As already described, E 512 is used only for the preservation of asparagus products to maintain their white color in food production. There exists a maximum limit for the addition of E 512 at 25 mg per kilogram.
Risks
The use of E 512 as a food additive is considered safe for the human organism. However, consuming large amounts of E 512 can lead to stomach irritation. A recommended daily dose has not been established.
