E 900 - Polydimethylsiloxane

Last updated: 23.01.2018

Polydimethylsiloxane is a so-called silicone oil and is used in industrial food production as an anti-foaming agent. It is listed under the designation E 900. However, declaration of the additive is not necessarily required. E 900 is an important substance in many processes of food production and is mainly used during the production of jam and similar products as a foam inhibitor.

E 900 - Polydimethylsiloxane

Origin

As the alternative name Silicone oil suggests, E 900 chemically belongs to the silicones. The silicone-based polymer is chemically synthesized for use in industrial food production. The end product is a colorless substance that is not soluble in water.

Usage

E 900 is only approved for use with certain foods and may only be added to these foods in specific maximum amounts. E 900 is used as an additive in frying fats and oils (10 mg/kg), fruit and vegetable preserves (10 mg/kg), chewing gum (100 mg/kg), jam, jelly, and marmalade (10 mg/kg).

Risks

The foaming inhibitor E 900 is completely non-toxic and is considered harmless to the human organism. Therefore, a recommended daily dose (ADI value) has not been established so far.
