Last updated: 23.01.2018

The substance Urea is permitted in the food industry as a stabilizer under the designation E 927 b. Another name for Urea is Carbamide. Urea is not only an end product of protein metabolism in humans but also in many other living beings and is excreted with urine. Therefore, Carbamide is a completely natural substance.

E 927b - Urea

Origin

E 927 b is produced for use as a stabilizer in a chemical reaction from ammonia and carbon dioxide. Chemically speaking, E 927b is an organic compound, a carbamide. Pure E 927 b appears as the end product as a white, crystalline solid substance that is completely non-toxic. The substance is often used under the name Urea in cosmetics due to its strong moisture-binding properties.

Usage

E 927 b provides a slightly salty and cooling taste impression. Due to these properties, it is used to round off the flavor of chewing gum. E 927 b is exclusively permitted for addition as a stabilizer in sugar-free chewing gums. Here, a maximum quantity limit of 30 g/kg must be observed.

Risks

No ADI value (Acceptable Daily Intake) has been set for the food additive Carbamide because E 927 b is considered completely harmless. E 927 b is processed and excreted by the body through the urea cycle like natural urea.
