Origin
E 953 is produced from sugar through a chemical process. In this process, the sugar is split into its components glucose and fructose and then recombined to form isomaltulose. This is then hydrogenated to produce isomalt. Through this process, white crystals are formed that have only about half the sweetness effect compared to regular household sugar.
Usage
Isomalt is particularly suitable for use in dietetic foods. Therefore, E 953 can be found in sugar-free ice cream, chewing gum, desserts, and sweets. However, E 953 is also used in normal foods such as mustard, sauces, and dietary supplements. Unlike other sugar substitutes, isomalt can replace sugar on a one-to-one basis because it not only sweetens but also gives the food a similar texture to regular sugar.
Risks
To date, no risks are known regarding the food additive E 953. It is considered completely safe. However, like all sugar substitutes, isomalt has a laxative effect. A warning notice can be found on the packaging of foods containing a certain amount for this reason.
